Angie Harmon sues Instacart after delivery driver fatally shoots her dog
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (TND) — Actor Angie Harmon has filed a lawsuit against grocery delivery app Instacart and one of its former drivers after her dog was fatally shot in March while items were being dropped off at her North Carolina home.
Court documents obtained by People show Harmon is accusing the delivery service and the driver of "alleged trespassing, conversion, negligence, negligent supervision/hiring, invasion of privacy and negligent misrepresentation" for the incident that happened on Easter weekend.
She is seeking at least $25,000 in damages.
The actor first mentioned the incident in an April 1 Instagram post where she claimed "a man delivering groceries for #Instacart shot & killed our precious Oliver. He got out of his car, delivered the food & THEN shot our dog. Our ring camera was charging in the house, which he saw & then knew he wasn’t being recorded. The police let him go b/c he claimed “self defense”. He did not have a scratch or bite on him nor were his pants torn."
Harmon also accused the driver, later identified as Christopher Anthoney Reid, of shopping under a woman's identity named Merle.
"We are completely traumatized & beyond devastated at the loss of our beloved boy & family member," she wrote.
In the filing, Harmon says she allegedly "heard what sounded like a gun shot" while her children were in the backyard.
After arriving outside, Harmon claimed to notice Reid "was placing a gun in the front of his pants, potentially in his pant pocket. Looking to the side, she saw that her beloved dog, Oliver, was shot. Although shot, Oliver was still alive.”
Oliver was then rushed to the veterinarian's office where he later died, according to the lawsuit.
Additionally, the suit alleges Reid was "not injured" or "seriously threatened" and had "ample opportunity" to leave the property.
Instacart issued a statement to People noting they suspended the shopper and were working with local law enforcement on their investigation.
"Our hearts continue to be with Ms. Harmon and her family following this disturbing incident," the company further stated on May 14. "While we cannot comment on pending litigation, we have no tolerance for violence of any kind, and the shopper account has been permanently deactivated from our platform."
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department also told People "The driver told officers that a dog attacked him while he was at the residence and that he defended himself by firing a single gunshot, striking and mortally wounding the dog. Another dog was present at the residence but did not attack."
Harmon is known for her work on "Law & Order" and "Rizolli & Isles."
